Excellent cinematography and beautiful sets make this rather tiresome zombie drama worth watching. Bela Lugosi plays a thoroughly evil zombie master in Haiti. He conspires with a plantation owner who wants to make the bride of an eloping couple his own. Soon, the plantation owner is dissatisfied with his zombie bride and wants Lugosi to free her. Lugosi decides to control them both, but his plot his foiled in the end. Many of the poses and gestures Lugosi assumes here I've seen used in several of his later films. I downloaded the mpeg1 file. The film is in fine shape, though frames are missing here and there and the audio recording leaves dialog difficult to understand at times. The storyline is actually father nice, with Lugosi playing his usual evil character. This time he creates pseudo-zombies by giving his victims a drug which simulates death and destroys the subjects will. He gets involved with a white Haitian land baron who has fallen in love with a young woman he met on a cruise ship, and who he invited to his house, where she is to married to another man the same day. The lande baron appeals to Lugosi for help, with predictable but entertaing results.
